Call of Duty: Black Ops

Post by Master Fenrir »

So who has it, and what do you think so far?

Honestly, there was a lot of cheap shit in MW2, but this is even worse in my opinion. Horrible spawns, all weapons completely nerfed, and weak servers have led to 3 days of frustration for me. My kdr should be a 4 right now, but I'm hovering at about a 1.4 because almost everything about this game sucks.

I have only played like 5 games but there are positives and negatives to it. I personally am okay with nerfed weapons (aside from snipers) if you were going to kill someone you should still kill them even if the weapons are nerfed. Also generally the better weapons are unlocked when you get to the later levels so I'm sure that will change as you advance and get new weapons. Personally i like the pay for things as that way you can unlock perks/kill-streaks/attachments in the order you want instead of having to complete challenges to get them. Also the fact that 2 people can play online from the same system is a huge improvement in my eyes. Also i haven't noticed bad spawns or bad servers though this could be based on what platform you are playing on. Also what is the cheap shit you are talking about for MW2, personally I liked MW2 thought i still think Modern Warfare is the best first person shooter to date.

What do you have it for?

I haven't played the multiplayer yet, but the campaign is downright weird. I'm not finished yet, so don't tell me how it ends. There is a TON more language (especially the f-word) in this one than what I remember from the previous ones. But all the flashbacks and random images are just plain weird.

Clearly you haven't played MW2. This game is full of stupid shit and don't even deny it. People spawn behind you all the time, bullets disappear, knives miss, etc.

The only one i have had happen is people spawning behind me...which is usually only in demolition (I'm sure it happens in other settings but i only play team deathmatch or demolition) and when i am in the area where the other team spawns. Also i really have never had the other 2 happen to me so maybe this is based on what platform you are using?

Even the snipers are nerfed. I got excited when I unlocked the WA2000, because that was my sniper rifle of choice in MW2. And I hardscope because I'm old school. It was horrible, so I stopped using it. Admittedly the maps do not have great sight lines, which was intentional to stop half the players in each map from being sniper classes like in MW2. Then I unlocked the classified sniper, which has vastly superior stats. I bought it and equipped a silencer. First match was Array and the first guy I tried to kill gave me 4 hit markers before he pegged and killed me with his assault rifles. Sniping is horrible in this game. Period.

ljex wrote:Also generally the better weapons are unlocked when you get to the later levels so I'm sure that will change as you advance and get new weapons.

True. So far the best weapons I've come across are the classified light machine gun, I think it's called the Stoner63 or something, and the Galil assault rifle. Those weapons are pretty good. The AK47 looks to have better stats than the Galil, but I'm 1 level away from unlocking it, so I haven't tested it out yet.

ljex wrote:Personally i like the pay for things as that way you can unlock perks/kill-streaks/attachments in the order you want instead of having to complete challenges to get them.

It's okay, I suppose.

ljex wrote:Also the fact that 2 people can play online from the same system is a huge improvement in my eyes.

Agreed. I can now play with all 4 of my brothers at the same time instead of just two of them, which makes the game a lot more fun.

ljex wrote:Also i haven't noticed bad spawns or bad servers though this could be based on what platform you are playing on.

The spawns are ridic. At least 5 times I've killed somebody camping a building, I turn around, they respawn in the same damn building, and they kill me. Yesterday I was playing Nuke Town and got spawned into a line of fire, dying .5 seconds later.

I have it for the Xbox.

I'm not tech savvy, but I hear they don't have dedicated server, and what I gather from the dudes on gamefaqs is that this means BO players share server space with people playing MW2 and WaW. The problem this causes is that it takes forever to get a free lobby. And when you try to join a game with a party of 3+, members of the party are constantly getting dropped. One time a few days ago it seriously took my brothers and I about 20 minutes to successfully get into a game together.

ljex wrote:Also what is the cheap shit you are talking about for MW2, personally I liked MW2 thought i still think Modern Warfare is the best first person shooter to date.

Cheap shit from MW2:
-One Man Army & Danger Close noob-tubers
-quickscoping
-marathon, lightweight, commando running tac-knifers (though I admit I'm guilty of this, I MLC every match of Underpass and Skidrow)
-maps that are horribly camp-friendly

There is no more OMA or DC, so that's fixed. Scavenger no longer refills tubes, I think. I dunno, I don't equip the tube in this game. The weapons are so nerfed, I equip the Warlord perk (equivalent to Bling) and the red dot and extended mags just to increase my chances of actually killing somebody. Quickscoping is gone, but at the cost of almost all sniping, even normal sit-and-camp-hardscope sniping. There's no more Commando or tac knife which makes a lot of people happy, but I miss it. Call me cheap if you want, but I just found it fun. These maps are just as camp-friendly. I had heard Treyarch was good at creating maps that were hard to camp, but each map is big with 100 small buildings to camp in.

Ok, I'm done ranting for now.

Ok i know about all this cheap stuff though you could play around most of them

-they sucked but i did this from time to time to piss people off
-annoying but few people were good at it
-what bothered me about this was the fact that bullets would slow someone down from stabling you though people were really good at this
-ill agree i dont remember nearly as much camping in cod 4

Does this game have a long campaign?

I can't play games online, and I understood this to be mostly a multi-player game, so I didn't purchase it.

Campaign sucks, took me 4 hrs max to beat it on hardened. It is a terrible port to PC, lags like crazy, even with a top of the line computer. The new patch are supposed to fix it, time will tell.

If it is on the Xbox or PS3 it is easy: Black Ops. If it is on the PC BO is a bit buggy still wait a week or two before deciding.

Side note I heard NV sucked.

I haven't finished the campaign yet, but I played it for about 3 hours this morning. You pretty much follow your sergeant around the entire time and shoot people. That's it. If you can't play it online, I wouldn't get it just for the campaign.

The game's alright. I'm just used to MW2, and Call of Duty 4.

WHat's weird about Black Ops is that the running, the movement, and the guns are goofy as hell. CoD4 was awesome, the guns "felt" better when shooting and aiming. Black Ops feels really lacking.

And the maps are very small. Even the "big" ones are small. In CoD4, it was awesome. The choke points were better designed, and flanking was more fun. Black Ops maps have about 3 main ways, and it's easy to memorize and gets old fast. Should've just brought back the older maps anyway...

Black Ops reminds me so much of Counter-Strike speedball maps with auto-aim on.

EDIT: "cheesy." That's the word I'm looking for.

For me, it did. Ended up accidentally shooting some mutant goat/yak thing and that somehow turned everyone in that town against me. So I ended having to kill each one of them without knowing where the hell I was suppose to go. No map, just a stupid little compass where you have to do a 360 degree turn half the time to find which way you're supposed to go. Not to mentio there's no "mission quest log" that keeps track of all the things you're supposed to do.

Though, it was kind of interesting to see the doc's head get blown to bits.

And just so you know, I was maybe 45 minutes into it before I decided I would return the damn thing. Got lost WAY to easily.
"Eh, whatever."

Black Ops or Bfield?

I don't mean to brag, but I will. I don't experience problems with Battlefield; I make the problems.

Army of GOD wrote:MW2.

MW2 got really bad about 3 months ago. When all of the regulars stopped playing, the dbags started crawling out of the woodwork once they realized there was nobody who would go off on them in the lobby for their cheap shit. All of a sudden, everybody was using either a noob toob or a heartbeat sensor. Now, each map is a campfest.

Black Ops has the exact same camping problem, currently. Nobody is overly-familiar with the maps yet, so they just like to hunker down in a building, plant a claymore behind them, and then hang around for the duration of the match.

Here's 4 more complaints I have about Black Ops.

1) Shotguns are now just as useless as sniper rifles. They're nerfed, so unless you get a really close range chest or headshot, they're not one-hit killers. And most maps are far too open for the shotgun to be useful. You can get away with them in Grid and Havanna, but that's about it.

2) Getting the Pro version of any perk is a pain in the ass. Each perk has 3 challenges you have to complete, and one of them is always brutal. Here's an example:
Scavenger Pro:
Challenge 1: Resupply 150 times - Easy
Challenge 2: Get 5 kills without dying 5 times - Easy, not sure what it has to do with Scavenger
Challenge 3: Get 5 kills with re-supplied grenades - Brutal, just brutal

On top of that, the perk doesn't automaticall upgrade to the pro version. You have to buy the upgrade for 3500.

3) The Nuketown map...why? This map should be called Camper's Delight. This is the map setup:

Backyard 1
House 1
Bus in the middle of the street
House 2
Backyard 2

It's a tiny map, and the houses have like 3 rooms. The entire match is played by lobbing grenades and noobs tubes over the bus, shooting from the 2nd story of one house to the other, and camping in the backyards, waiting for the shit spawns to kick in and spawn an enemy 5 feet in front of you. And it is infuriating when this happens to you.

But people love it for some reason. In the lobby, you are allowed to vote to play the next map, the previous map, and a random map. Once you hit a Nuketown, people will just keep voting it. Yesterday, I got stuck in a lobby where I had to play it 5 times in a row before I backed out. Horrible, just horrible.

4) The Classified launcher that you unlock is called the China Lake. It is the same exact thing as the Thumper from MW2, just with a different name. Since I thought the Thumper sucked, this was pretty disappointing.
