Keeping up with the NFL Draft to me is not worth the effort nor the attention it gets from some.

The same is true for me for college football recruitment, and now add the Transfer Portal to that list of "Things I do not value that much."

I wait to see how a player does on the team and on the field. Any judgement before I leave to the experts. Yes, knowing who is the #1 draft pick is interesting, but what happens when they actually play is for me of most interest, not what some expert EXPECTS.

Look at the list of NFL #1 draft picks:
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/399 ... story-know

Some do well, a few VERY WELL, and some are a BUST. And not at Hooters, either. :D

Recruits and transfers (and lower draft picks) are the SAME, just MORE of them on many more teams. And YES, the Cleveland Browns have not done well in the NFL for a LONG time.

The Ravens just released Justin Tucker who is one of, if not the greatest kicker of the last 10-15 years. They drafted a new kicker a few weeks ago and are saying this is 100% a football decision and has nothing to do with the multitude of allegations he was sexually assaulting girls at massage places around Baltimore throughout his tenure as a raven.

Will he be Donald Trumps next pick for National Security Advisor?

Carr announced his retirement. Don't think he was ever a bad QB. Always just a middling. Injuries galore though

Your raging, angry liberal is showing, Mook. Best up your meds....besides, his "devout catholic" status is really the "kicker" here. Typical.

Let's try this:

The Pacers win game 6 in Indiana and now we await Game 7 of the NBA Playoffs.

Let's discuss SPORTS and take a break from the hate of some in the Political arena.

With Football season around the corner, I'd have to say this off season and preseason for the NFL has been hilarious. Take the most recent news. Micah Parsons being traded to GB, a team that regularly beats the brakes off of Dallas, for 2 first round picks and a "who's this guy?"

I'd weigh in on the Sanders drama with the Browns but I'd be beating a dead horse.

Big win for DDS’ Niners last night.
Meanwhile Detroit looks real good again since their Week 1 stumble. Except the injury bug started biting again last week…

We squeeked that. That first half, Stafford looked like ass. Jones actually played solid. For all the injuries we have, I'm shocked we came out with a win. Happy birthday to me! Lol.

The injuries are insane across the board. Almost every team is suffering. NFL really needs to look into the fields. This shouldn't happen so early into the season.

There were some exciting games this weekend, both College CFP and the NFL.

The Pittsburgh Steelers win over Detroit Lions was a good one, as was the New England Patriots winning over the Baltimore Ravens.

In the CFP, two road teams won in R1: Alabama wins over Oklahoma and Miami Hurricanes defeat Texas A&M. The Group of 5 teams were both defeated, as expected; JMU from Virginia did manage to cover the point spread of some 21 points vs. Oregon.

To be FAIR, with the hiring of Coach Dan Campbell, the Lions have done well in RECENT years. Like the KC Chiefs, they may NOT make the Playoffs THIS year. Can they get back their "Mojo" in 2026??

Year/Season wins losses ties Finish in Division (NFC North) Playoff Result
2025 8 -7 - 0 3rd of 4

2024 15 -2 -0 1st of 4 Lost Div (lost to Washington Commanders, as I recall in a HUGE upset)

2023 12 -5 -0 1st of 4 Lost Conf (first year in the Playoffs in a LONG TIME)

2022 9 -8 -0 2nd of 4
2021 3 -13 -1 4th of 4
2020 5 -11 -0 4th of 4
2019 3 -12 -1 4th of 4
2018 6 -10 -0 4th of 4

IN 2011, 2014, and 2016, the Lions lost in R1 of the Playoffs in the Wild Card Round. I think their playoff win in 2023 was their first playoff win in a very long time, since 1991? Perhaps ConfedSS knows..??

Ignoring the stats and Confeds...Random rambles about not wholly relevant to football, the Lions have made leaps in and bounds in recent years under Dan Cambell. Coaching goes a long ways. You can hire all the talent you want, but if you have a staff that just doesn't care, then the players won't either. As JP4 put it, no one thought the Chiefs were really anything but just a middle of the ground team until Andy Reid took over.

I often compare American Football to Chess. (btw: I am currently #7 on the CC Chess Scoreboard.) Football has the complexity of Chess, but has what I liken to be LIVING and BREATHING Chess pieces, each doing their roles to an incredible and admirable level of excellence and with a dramatic flair, too. The most watched TV event of the year is always the Super Bowl, the Championship of the NFL. (Chess gets very few viewers.) I think the #1 TV Shows each week are NFL games, too, with over 20 million US viewers, if I understand the stats correctly.

To be good at football, obviously one must have really good players. But there must also have good coaches, many good coaches, for different positions and roles (such as motivator, the "bad" Coach who will get on a player for mistakes and another who may "pump' the player back up [the Motivator], the strength Coach, the Receivers Coach, etc.)

And a team needs to have the right "Scheme" to use on Offense, Defense, and Special Teams (Beamer Ball anyone??) to use against a specific opponent.

Back to players: since there are eleven players on the field for one team for one play (like soccer or futbol), there is a LOTS of complexity. You need speed on the edges and decent speed and HUGE size and strength on the O- and D- Lines. And there are the linebackers and running backs who have this incredible combination of both power and speed. And the Quarterback who can nearly instantly process the situation in SECONDS and make the appropriate response, such as pass, run, handoff and where to put the ball. (I watched 44 year old [and grandfather] Philip Rivers last night for the Colts who made some unbelievable throws. He has been playing for the Colts only two weeks and started ahead of a young man who was a decent college QB who does not have the skills YET to process all the information in a given situation on the field to be nearly as effective.)

And ALL this must be executed to near perfection for the right result. It is said that blocking and tackling are fundamental to football. YES. BUT fans do not go to a game or watch it on TV for blocking and tackling. Most of us watch for the SPECTACULAR PASSES by the QB, and/or the incredible catches by the Receivers, or the Great Runs and breaking tackles by the Running Backs. What is the iconic image on the Heisman Trophy? The Running Back or player and a "stiff arm" to ward off a tackler.

It said that Defense wins Championships, but great Offense plays sells tickets and brings in the viewers. =D> :D =D> That and the drama of watching who will win and who will make The Great Play(s). It is FUN, especially this time of year. As a Teacher, I am very busy most of the Fall, but as we get to the Holidays, I have time to watch and REALLY ENJOY the games, college and NFL both. SO WATCH and ENJOY.

And Thanks, DDS. Is your team the 49ers?? They looked really good last night. Despite the heroics of Philip Rivers, it was clear that the "Niners" are the Better Team.

Yeah 49ers. Weird season with Purdy being out for 8 games and Mac Jones actually looked pretty damn good too. All the injuries on the defensive side of the ball, it's sort of a miracle we've been winning games. Our last two games are going to be tough. The Bears and The Seahawks. We've already secured a playoff spot, but if we win these next two, we win our division I think.

 Someone said they need better fans, too. You want to take credit for that, too, ConfedSS?

Owners need to hire the RIGHT people and then let them DO THEIR JOBS. I will say Dan Campbell is doing a decent job, as indicated by the record over the past 2+ years. One Fourth Down play does not determine the effectiveness of a Coach, ConfedSS. He consistently rolls the dice on 4th down, going for it 100 times in the past years, as reported during the broadcast. So, Detroit must have terrible FANS. RIGHT??

btw: during the game in Detroit, I saw some nice scenes LIVE of Downtown Detroit. Is there a comeback for Detroit, or has it lost its Mojo, too? Or did it lose it MOWtown??

btw2: I have recently been in Detroit TWICE in recent years. Nice Airport. We did not leave the airport to visit the city, but I did ask for water from Flint, Michigan at a place inside the airport.

Anyway, the NFL games are getting really good and MEANINGFUL. AND we have two more weeks in the REGULAR Season. I enjoyed the games I watched. btw3: NBA and NHL goes on, but playoffs are in April, May, and June, so it's too early for really meaningful games.

My main points:

1) Detroit Lions have done well recently, especially under Dan Cambbell, and much better than previous iterations.

2) Football is FUN to watch, and MANY watch the NFL.

3) Playoff times (for ALL sports) are the BEST time to watch and enjoy.

4) I am glad that Detroit is improving and money is put back into many parts of the city. GOOD...!

btw: There are 3 NFL Games on Christmas Day (All times Eastern.)

Dallas Cowboys at Washington Commanders: 1 p.m.

Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings: 4:30 p.m.

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs: 8:20 p.m.

Denver is in the Playoffs and Detroit has a good shot; I think the other 4 teams above are OUT.

btw2: I have been to some sporting events, mostly to watch my Virginia Tech Hokies, who had a TERRIBLE football record this year (3-8, no bowl game). I have been to Notre Dame University to see two of my favorite teams play a while back and a Bowl game in Charlotte, NC, the same year. Both were fun and I went to each with my wife and one of my adult children. I also have been to one NBA game (to watch Larry Bird and company), a few MLB games (baseball), and one NHL game in NC to watch the Hurricanes vs. the Washington Capitols. They were ALL FUN. I want to go to ONE NFL game in a stadium; THAT is on my "Bucket List."
